Exploring Traditional Medicine

IAMP is now calling for abstracts/short reports that showcase successful examples of how traditional medical practices can play a role in modern medicine.
The authors of the best 15-20 abstracts/short reports, as judged by an expert committee to be set up by IAMP, will be invited to submit a full-length case study (by the end of July) and to present their work at an international symposium to be held in Beijing, China, in September 2015 (provisionally 21-22 September).
International travel and local expenses will be covered by the project organizers.

Methods 2014 - International Symposium on Methods for Studying Drug Metabolism and Transport and Herbal Derived Medicines

School of Public Health Clinical Trials and Indigenous Herbal Medicine Course 7-11 July 2014 at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa.  Prof Gail Hughes and Dr Nandi Siegfried provided insight on clinical trials research using indigenous medicine.

This course provided an enriching opportunity for students and faculty interested in learning more about clinical trial research.

MUTHI Workshops

The MUTHI team has organized workshops in different universities around Africa.

In Ile-Ife, Nigeria from August 8th to 12th 2014, hosted by Obafemi Awolowo University and facilitated by researchers from the University of Oxford. This workshop was attended by 33 participants, mainly from Nigeria and two from Ghana.

At the University of Makerere, from February 4th to the 13th 2013, between 13 and 26 participants attended workshops focused on IPR and ethics, ethnobotanical studies and clinical trials for herbal medicine. Participants attended from three African countries: Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda.

In Durban, 12 participants from Cameroon, Nigeria and South Africa attended a workshop on clinical trials dealing specifically with herbal medicine.

At the Department of Traditional Medicine in Bamako, Mali from February 24th to 28th 2014, co-hosted by researchers from the Université des Sciences, Techniques et Technologies de Bamako and the University of Oxford, the MUTHI team organized a french workshop on clinical trials for herbal medicine. The 16 participants at this workshop were from Mali, Burkina Faso Congo and the Republic of Benin.

The clinical trials workshops covered questions around:

-Designing clinical trials

-National/international regulations

-Ethics protocols

-Results analysis

-Evidence based Medicine

Participants developed their own research proposals based on evaluating a herbal medicine.
